The deadline for this round of the National Library of Australia Community Heritage Grants is looming: applications close 4 May 2012. Grants of up to $15,000 are available to community organisations such as libraries, archives, museums, genealogical and historical societies, multicultural and Indigenous groups.

 

Grants are available for:

  • collection significance assessments
  • collection preservation needs assessments
  • conservation activities
  • collection management, and
  • training workshops.

Despite the fact that there are more than 35,000 European officials and representatives resident in Brussels, you don’t have to dig too deeply to uncover something distinctly local. Sure, you can head east to the European Quarter to be overwhelmed by the de facto capital of the EU, but you’ve only got 24 hours, so let’s stay in the old city instead. Defined by a series of small boulevards (petite ceinture / kleine ring) which follow the late 14th century city walls, your boundary lines for the day are clear enough.

The city is compact, and its meandering streets and laneways invite you to get lost. They are generously signed, so with a map in hand the old centre should be relatively easy, although there are true rewards for those happy to venture through an unmarked arch or little laneway. School French should assist those who are desperate for guidance and want the practice. Despite Belgium being officially bilingual few residents appear to understand Dutch, with English being the more common second language.
